Project Investigations on the dynamics of affective viewer responses to film

This project aims to make a fundamental film theoretical question about the emotional effect of viewing genre films accessible to neuropsychological study:

What role do narrative patterns on the one hand and cinematic aesthetics on the other play for viewers’ emotional reactions and what is their relation to one another?

To answer these questions we combine a descriptive method of analyzing cinematic expressivity (eMAEX) and diverse methods of measuring physiological changes (Skin conductance response (SCR), heart rate, respiratory rate) as well as magnetic resonance imaging.

This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence "Languages of Emotion"at the Free University Berlin and is directed by Prof. Dr. Hermann Kappelhoff and Prof. Dr. Lars Kuchinke.
