In this unit, after a short dynamic introduction, three times an—in principle—identically structured staging is repeated on the level of shot sequences, establishing the constellations of and dialogues between interviewer and interviewee.

Each time the staging goes through the following three steps: After an introduction in shot–reverse shot using medium close shots or over shoulder shots, a misunderstanding or need for clarification is articulated between interviewer and interviewee. This is followed by larger framing and faster shot-reverse shots and resolved in a short shot of both figures in dialogue; the figures come closer together and provide a bridge to the next dialogue. The third repetition adds to this pattern the relationship between the recruit’s skittishness and the calm equanimity of the superior officer, whereby the latter gains the upper hand in the course of the resolution.

The recruits’ stories add three distinct civilian backgrounds —a farmer, a member of the educated middle-class and a big city boy—and are welcomed by the figure of the interviewer to the army or rather to this special battalion.
