The melody played by high pitched instruments refers to the beginning of the scene (> EMU 1) and is an acoustical parentheses that marks the end of the scene.  This is accomplished on the level of shot composition. Through the camera perspective, the frame seems extremely narrow and presses the three figures together, stressing that there is one too many. The camera is static as Kathy says goodbye to both Curt and Larry. The intimacy of the action (the kisses) is countered by the overlap in the tight frame.
