This unit creates an abstract image of a big picture through the interplay of shot composition, camera and sound design. In the dynamic pattern that unfolds, the image of the big picture refuses to be an individual/rational or sensory form of experience and instead is accomplished as the image of relaxed camaraderie. There is therefore a clear demarcation to the preceding EMU through a change to brightly lit images and the lower volume of the sounds of battle. This caesura is supported by a fast zoom. On the semantic level, the dialogue marks the soldiers’ action—painting an American flag on the roof of the hospital—as a seemingly civilian act, whereby intonation and nonchalance of the deed are characterized by the relaxation and calmness of a conversation during a break.  This is contrasted with the tone of voice of the rude reprimand by their superior, Transport. The order of command conveyed on the level of composition is continued, parallel to Transport’s fast descent down the ladder, in the form of a fast tilt downwards and the sudden change of tone when Transport reports to Col. Thorwald and there is a transition to the next EMU.
