The previously introduced abstract image of a stratagem in the merging of the big and small pictures is mirrored in close combat in the final EMU. First, an image of tension is built from the interplay of the levels of the characteristics of graphic images, contrasts of dark and light and the sound design. This takes place on the level of images through a confusing jumble of the graphic patterns of the leaves and continuously new arrangements of light/dark contrasts. This image of tension ends in peripeteia, conveyed mostly through a change on the acoustic level. Close combat is introduced by a sudden dynamic eruption on the level of sound design in the form of loud volleys of gunfire, in direct contrast to the previously established silence. The bridge to the image of self-denying sacrifice begins with a change to fully lit images and a toning down of the sound, in which “Taps” and the quiet speech of the dying marine can now be heard.
