In the interplay of camera and sound design an image unfolds of the remembrance of fallen war heroes and transforms the intensity of this contemplation into increased sovereignty of the acting military body.

The first shot shows the evacuation of the wounded in a long shot and then the preparations for blowing up the enemy radio station. This is followed by a prolonged shot that condenses the cycle of military activity, loss and renewed mobility. First Colonel Thorwald enters the frame to oversee the orders to evacuate. A short camera pan captures a second soldier in the frame, who brings the news of Transport’s death. Supported by brass playing the Marines’ Hymn, the soldier leaves the frame so that the Colonel’s face now moves into center frame. His facial expression momentarily mirrors loss as heroic sacrifice. With the musical about-face and the acoustic turn to dialogue, Thorwald breaks his pose and a new pan brings him back into line within the space of military action.

A last cut continues the cross-cutting with the lookout. Supported by uplifting brass melodies it portrays the collective military body and its linkage of physical and technological means as an extraordinary entity capable of action and perception.
