This scene portrays a process of demoralization accompanied by a slow realization. The affective curve of the dramaturgy is a staged sequence of emotions from alarmed awakening, to growing tense fear to stunned certainty and mourning. It is realized in the main through the interplay of character constellation and camera. The fog is given the role of a hostile antagonist. It creates on the one hand an unpredictable situation and on the other hand a gap with multiple meanings—an “off” within the frame.

The spatial movement of the group can be divided into two temporal segments. It is structured on the one hand through the creation and alarmed dispersion of the group in space (> EMU 1), and on the other hand through the musically underscored change from parallel camera movement and horizontal character movements to an increased depth of space and the scattering of the characters—a variation on the creation of a group in mourning mode (> EMU 2).    HJC
