In the film’s dramaturgical construction, this scene is between the death of Malloy in his battle against the enemy plane and Ramirez’s death from malaria.

The scene’s structure is characterized by a dual change of dynamic. It is organized as the staging of agitation; its structure includes a prelude that increases the dynamic, a caesura and the echo of this interruption. The dominant element is facial expression in interplay with music and camera.

Emotions unfold as changing facial expressions, whereby the transition between them takes place first on the level of editing and pointed musically staged shock and second as an outbreak in the temporal space of a camera movement. The cut (the second reverse shot to the jungle) and the camera movement are the dynamic turning points of the scene. The scene is thus characterized by an intensive rise and fall. This rise and fall corresponds with the quick change in emotions: from blocked triumph to horror, from horror to rage.    ML
