An ambivalent image, connecting resignation and hope, is created through the interplay of shot composition and sound design.
On the visual level, the motif of resignation previously developed (> EMU 1) is maintained: in a long shot, the ducked figure of the British Major comes under literal pressure in the shot composition. Unexpected bursts of gunfire and the return of signal-like melodic fragments combine a motif of resignation with a motif of danger.
This motif is amended after a pan. The pressure on the figures on the level of shot composition remains, but the framing of the figures adds a moment of intimacy. The tension between hopelessness and hope expressed on the level of dialogue is also expressed by the music; deep fragments of a melody are increasingly pushed to the background by a harmonic string melody.
